> } 2D

This is 2D's biography from Phase 1 that could be found on the original Kong website as well as extra tidbits from interviews and other media. Not all of this is canon anymore, and any retconned information will be found at the bottom of the page under the "Retconned" section.

Original Bio, Kong Studios Website:

Born: Crawley
Age: 23
Influences: Butorphanoi, Tartrate, Phill Oakey, Lucio Fulci

Hit twice on the head when young, 2D is a sweetheart with a blank sheet of paper where a brain should be. He has really good hair. People think he's cool and enigmatic but he's just got a migraine.

2D idolises Murdoc, who, he feels, saved his life. Keyboard wizard, melodica maniac, graffiti compulsive and the perfect pin-up product. Voice like an angel, arse like a satsuma. Mind full of zombies and painkillers. Says nothing controversial. Says nothing much at all.

Loved by everyone (except the green eyed Murdoc), 2D has legions of lady followers and would make a good boyfriend if only he'd wake up.

Updated Bio, Tomorrow Comes Today rerelease, 2002:

2D is only vaguely aware of his incredible success. The blue-haired poster boy has describedthe tidal wave as "er... wicked." While his migraines, graffiti complusion and melodica mania may have given away to him becoming a "Cosmonaut of Inner Space," he's still navigating with a hand-sprayed map. His good work for the Free Tibet campaign must, 2D contests, prove his naysayers "wrong or something?" God help him if he ever had to get a proper job!

Future projects: Clocking Tetris and meeting the young David Cassidy. When asked what the future holds, he said: "That's for you to know and me to find out... no... wait a minute..."

- said to smell like butterscotch flavored Angel Delight by Noodle
- he's a big fan of the Resident Evil series
- he's a graffiti artist, the Gorillaz logo is one of his works

During Phase 1, 2D mentions his girlfriend Paula several times. Examples of this include a Dazed & Confused interview from 2000 and the on-stage dialogue that played during concerts. In 2001 the mysterious Dr. Wurzel leaked the song Ghost Train, mentioning for the first time that Paula was the first guitarist of Gorillaz and played on that track, as well as mentioning she had an affair with Murdoc. Interestingly, he mentioned that Paula was 2D's girlfriend, but never said ex. Later, Rise of the Ogre would make it clear that 2D and Paula broke up after the incident, effectively retconning all mentions of them dating during the run of the first album.

In the Dotmusic webchat, 2D says his hair turned blue after he was hit by Murdoc's car. This is no longer canon. The current explanation for his hair color is that he fell out of a tree as a child and all of his (originally brown) hair fell out and grew back blue.

In phase 1, 2D's name is properly spelled 2-D, despite many official publications like the biography above spelling it 2D. This was fully retconned into 2D during phases 2 and 3, but was brought back for phase 4 and has been spelled as 2-D again since 2017. This website uses 2D for simplicity and cohesion's sake.
